In 1929 León Barrenechea took part in the Ibero-American Exhibition in Seville with a sculpture entitled ‘Pelotari’, another entitled ‘Prueba de bueyes’, also a weightlifter, and finally ‘Layadores’, which received very good reviews. another entitled ‘Prueba de bueyes’ also a weight lifter and lastly ‘Layadores’ which received very good reviews. The last two sculptures were made in plaster and later reproduced in bronze to avoid their deterioration.
The sculpture we present here bears some similarities with some of the pieces known by the author, as is the case of the work entitled ‘Prueba de barra’ where we can see how the head looks downwards and is slightly tilted, with a pronounced nose, txapela or beret leaving the ears uncovered and the open collar of the shirt in the shape of a V with wide lapels, just like another sculpture by the artist entitled ‘Pelotari’ which was exhibited at the Ibero-American Exhibition in Seville, with a more elaborate face but with a very similar treatment to the piece we present here, as can be seen in the buttons on the shirt.
As for the model we present here, the wide, voluminous folds stand out, giving the sculpture volume and movement.
The artist has masterfully captured the state of concentration of the player as he puts on the basket-pointed glove.
The piece would probably be submitted for a project or an award.
The piece is in very good condition.
